I ended up embarking on a journey trying to fix the same issues myself and learned that gzdoom is garbage for Hexen and Heretic, looks so bad. I'm trying to see if I can get my hands on Crispy Hexen binaries, otherwise I will settle for Chocolate Hexen or Zdoom Classic 2.1.8 edit: Link for Hexen screenshots source port comparison With the exception that ZdoomClassic doesn't support mods. As seen in these E2M6 screenshots here, on top of looking wrong it affects gameplay, some sections will become outright unplayable update: Tested Zdoom Classic 2.1.8 and ZDoomLE (same author as LZdoom and more) This one works and looks correctly for Hexen, approved. As seen in these screenshots of the dungeon entrance area in E2M6, looks totally wrong in gzdoom variants On top of that, a second concern would be the way lighting looks in gzdoom variants. For some of these old games, if you make everything look clean and hi-res you will make it look bland. In regards to "keeping it vanilla" I would warn you that all gzdoom variants remove the "software color banding", which means that walls far away from you do not get darker anymore (as originally designed) which takes away from the atmosphere a great bit, since everything will look "too clean".
#GZDOOM HERETIC MOD#
Update: The mod is compatible with ZDoomLE which preserves accuracy to how the original game looked (specially lighting) zdoom32.exe -file hex_balance.pk3 hex_balancebosses.pk3 lzdoom.exe -file hex_balance.pk3 hex_balancebosses.pk3 I've been replaying Hexen and it's crazy how these two mods make the game much more enjoyable, specially in regards to the centaurs.
